Are cows and old people the bane of your life? Are ginger kids more of a threat to your livelihood than swine flu? Live for strategy? Love a challenge? Enjoy coarse humour, foul language and snow? Then you will love South Park Lets Go Tower Defense Play!

South Park, Colorado – not quite your average suburban American town. Alien anal probes, ManBearPigs and a walking, talking robotic towel that encourages recreational drug use; just a few of the many wacky and wonderful creations to step out of the animated series that has caused as much controversy as it has hilarity over the years. Having released several games since the show’s start some 12 years ago (hands up if that makes you feel old) it seems that it’s about time Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny had another to join the pile. Getting a respectable combination of TV franchise and decent game play is often tricky so in an attempt to please both fans and real gamers alike, Doublesix have released a strategic puzzle game with a South Park theme, in this instance a tower defense title.

The object is simple, defend the on-screen map from invasions of the enemy by planting defense towers and mechanisms that will destroy them as they attack. As much as tower defense games are an enjoyable genre in their own right, the real seller for this is always going to be the South Park referencing. Game play takes place over 11 recognisable locations from the South Park world for its stages where players must defend the town against invading hordes of enemies. Christmas critters, crab people, hippies, even the god damn Mongolians are trying to take over the town and it’s up to you to defend it!

Either in single or 4 way multi player and with the aid of laser beams, cherry bombs, fireworks or walls made from snow, each level must be defended against the waves of invading masses with a combination of towers and special abilities unique to each character. During each wave, downed enemies will also drop coins to fund upgrades and new defense systems as they get unlocked. A nice little nod to fans is the scrapbook, which contains hilarious collections of clips from the show that are unlocked as players progress. Game play itself contains memorable one liners and references to the episodes, which if you’re a mega fan like me, will keep you chuckling for hours! It’s also nice to know that all voicing is done by the original actors too, so there won’t be any cringeworthy replicas to put you off while battling against gnomes or homeless people begging for ‘chaaaaange‘.

Completing stages also unlocks some of the town’s most famous citizens for you to play as on the additional challenge levels. You can expect appearances from Jimmy and Timmy, Wendy, Tweak, Token and most importantly Butters, whose special ability of a whirlwind rendition of his ‘I’ve got something in my front pocket for you‘ tap dance literally left me with tears in my eyes from laughing!

The only real downside is that some people may find the concept repetitive, but that maybe more a fault of the genre rather than this title alone. The introduction of new characters, enemies and weapons on each stage does combat this somewhat, as there is always something new in each level, but depending on your knowledge and love of the show’s humour, you may tire of it sooner rather than later.

Summary

As tower defense games go, you're unlikely to get a more humorous experience than that of South Park Lets Go Tower Defense Play. The witty banter, bizarre weapons and crazy characters will give you more than enough entertainment for your 800 Microsoft points. A game based on a TV series is rarely going to please hardcore gamers, but if you're looking for a chuckle with credit to spare then this title will be a worthy investment and addition to your XBLA collection.
7/10

Players should be thankful that Cartman's Fire bomb ability doesn't originate from its usual place!
